Default Scrambler Problems

Recently I picked up a 98 Polaris Scrambler 4x4 and when I test drove it it ran great. As soon as I got it home it started running like crap. (go figure) When its in neutral it will idle fine but when I punch the throttle it wants to die out. If I pull the choke on one click it will rev up but won't idle. Any suggestions, I would really like to avoid the dealer to get it fixed if at all possible. I pulled the carb off and cleaned it out real good. The main and pilot jets seem to be clear. Thanks in advance....

sound to me like you have an air leak in the intake path somewhere, or you need to put a bigger mainjet in it. did you buy it from somewhere with a large altitude change from where you live? that could do it too

Thanks for the tip, I will check the intake boot and try a different main jet. I bought it fairly local so I don't think the altitude difference would really be an issue. It also has one of those AAEN oil injection block off kits on it. That wouldn't make that big of a difference would it?

Something like this happened a few years ago on our Polaris utility, The reverse over ride switch malfunctioned so it thought it was in reverse.
So I had to hold the over ride button down for it to rev at all, if you didn't it would spit and sputter, back fire, etc., you should try that, if that doesn't work try disconnecting it all together. This may be your problem or not, it's worth trying, or like dt250 said it could be an air leak some where on the intake side.
A oil block off kit shouldn't cause it to run like that, unless it needs to be rejetted when you start adding premix, I have never delt with a block off kit so I wouldn't know if it needs to be jetted or not.

I check my intake track and didn't find any air leaks. I did have some luck when I started fooling around with the air screw. It was backed out about 2 turns and when I moved it in to 1/2 turn the motor would finally respond better. It will now rev up from idle. The problem now is that it seems like it is idiling high. I adjusted the idle screw out quite a bit and also made sure there wasn't too much tension on the throttle cable. I haven't tried the bigger main jet yet, but will sometime today. Thanks for all you imput guys...

I don't think it needs to be rejetted b/c the block off on a blaster doesnt require you to so i dont know why you would have to on a polaris unless it works differently

Ya you should have to re-jet on a blaster. The factory injection runs the oil a little on the heavy side 24-26:1 or right around there. If you switch to pre mix and run a lighter mixture say like 40:1 it will richen up the Air fuel ratio and then you have to re-jet to get it back to optimum Jetting.

If the air screw is only 1/2 turn out some thing is wrong you might want to clean the carb or you might have to change your Pilot Jet.

HHmmmm well in the kit it says you don't have to rejet. I don't know the jetting's fine on my quad, but we think there's a short somewhere, which is giving me my problems
