Powder Coat is definatly the way to go. If I were doing this before I brought the wheels to the powderCoat shop I would sand them with a very fine 320-400 grit sandpaper, then wash them very good with hot soapy water. This will ensure a very good bond between the wheels & powdercoat.

What would i do if i just want to paint it without powder coating and still have a good looking rim without chips and cracks.

painting on smooth aluminum will surely chip off.... you would need to blast the rims.... the ruff clean surface will allow the paint to adhear better...multiply coats of paint will ensure a smooth finish over the sand blasted surface.... iv never done a rim before, but i have painted a few chrome and polished mufflers, and in my experience, this process works best... but i have to agree...powder coating is, great!

I wouldn't use soapy water to after sanding, moisture is left behind even if you wipe it down.
Acetone is your best bet.

Powedercoating is not that expensive, it's worth to save up for it!
