| okay maybe i can help you out, i restored a 1985 Polaris Trailboss (same as the cyclone). I bought it with a blown transmission and a bad gas tank for $50. Couldnt go wrong right? I was right! I happened across a message board and found a fellow who had just what i needed and a mere $200 bucks later (he even covered the shipping costs!!! what a guy!) i had what i needed. dropped in the tranny and the tank, filled it up and fired her up and off i went! the rest is history! I still have it (actually im trying to sell it so I can get a Jet Ski) and it still runs great and is more reliable than my LT! It sat for about 3 years and I went out a couple weeks ago to clean it up to go for sale and it started on the 3rd pull! They are a great motor. I havent had mine apart however to know about the ported piston... I do however have some transmission parts, if you take it apart and i have what you need i would be happy to help you out! as for no power under load i had the same problem. it turned out that i had mouse turds in the bowl of the carb and they were plugging the jet. if you clean the carb that would be someplace to start, and it might help (it cant hurt). As far as popping out of gear, these trannys are AWFUL! they do go bad. mine had a lot of teeth missing off of the gears as well as holes in the tranny case. like i said, i ended up getting a new tranny. another thing to look at is your swingarm bolts that go into the cups on the side of the tranny. you want to make sure that those bolts are into the cups as far as they go... they also have a tendency to loosen while you ride so i made braces that hold the bolt from turning that bolt right to the frame. i still use my oil injector but im leary of it... i plan to block it off before i sell it and use mixed gas. its a lot safer. let me know if i can help you out at all with any questions or pics of my machine or anything.

| Not sure if they have linkage for the f/r engagement like the newer Polaris quads do, but check to see if the rod/linkage is pushing the shift fork fully into place, my sportsman 500 wouldn't go into gear all the way once and that's what it was. Yes, the compression is low, but the screen in the fuel petcock is most likely stopped up from the year's of setting up, etc., letting it get plenty of fuel for idle, an to run the low gear of reverse but not supplying proper fuel flow for the strain of the higher forward gear, thus causing a bog like rev and not hitting the power band. |

| My dad bought one back in 87 right when they came out. he had it for a while and enjoyed it, never had a problem with it. He told me that aaen performance or someone like that said the bike put somewhere around 34 hp if i rememeber right i could be wrong tho... |

| I have one that I am working on to. It runs great, but I broke the front clutch. To be exact Polaris only made 416 of these in 1987 to compete with the 250r. They came with a bigger carb and intake, ported from the factory, and a bigger expansion chamber exhaust than the other Polaris 250's. When you take the inside clutch cover off you will see the engine number, it should have an 02 behind it, that denotes that it is a cyclone engine. As far as your tranny goes, your shifter linkage is worn, you might have to make a new idention on the tranny to hold the shifter in place. Or you can go on fleabay and find a used tranny from an 85-87 250 trailboss or 87 cyclone. The engines from these bikes are well sought after for cart racing. There is a Cyclone web site, I will have to find it and get back to you. |
