Default polaris sport 400

any one know anything about these quads. i'm lookin at buying one. but polaris is a blurr to me. anything good or bad about them. i know the weigh alot but that can usually be changed within a few good hours. one i'm lookin at says the starter motor broke due to the high compression from the work they had done to it..

They are heavy as you said. They also have a power robbing CVT tranny and single lever braking. If you don't know, single lever braking means that the lever on the bars that is typically the front brakes only actually applies brakes to all the wheels. You can't apply front brakes by themself. If I were you I'd pass on the Polaris and look for something else. You think it's going to be fast because it's a 400cc 2 stroke, but that's not going to be the case because it's heavy and because of the CVT tranny. On top of that it's not a goo handler.

well i was getting it for now as a trail quad and further down the line as a drag quad. i love 2 strokes and i dunno. its a fairly modified 400 and i can get it for a grand. i'll have to think about it. and that single lever braking thing.. i'm sure that could be fabbed up differently. and i dont know anything about thier trannies.. any info on them? how come they rob so much power? i thought they were just like sled trannies??

well i just did a lil bit of research on ctv which is continuesly variable transmission. should use a belt and pulleys and infinitely changes gear ratios to keep the engine in the powerband. from what i read the early ones weighed to much to be of any use but by today's standards they seem good (in text) are the ones in the sport 400 real heavy or is it just alot of rotating mass compared to a manual transmission. heres the mods that the quad has...the last mod listed is an adjustable fox shock..which came stock on the bike lol

HPD AGGRESSIVE CLUTCH KIT

- HPD RACE PORTING

- HPD BILLET HEAD, COVER AND O-RINGS - 110+ OCTANE RACE FUEL

- BILLET CHAMBER HIGH COMPRESSION CHAMBER - 110+ OCTANE RACE FUEL

- HPD MACHINED THE FLYWHEEL 1 1/2 POUNDS LIGHTER SO ENGINE CAN REV UP ALOT QUICKER

- KEIHIN CARBURATOR

- HPD PIPE AND MUFFLER

- WIESCO PISTON

- GIRDLE KIT

- OIL INJECTOR ELIMINATOR KIT

- HEAVY DUTY CLUTCH BUTTONS

- DELTA FORCE REED VALVES

- K&N AIR FILTER

- ADJUSTABLE FOX SHOCK (REAR)

$1000? What year is this quad?

As for the single lever braking, I'm sure there is away around it, but don't know how easy it is.

And for the tranny, CVTs are typically less efficient than manual transmissions so less of the power from the engine gets to the back wheels. That's what I was referring to.

your right, without a manual clutch your not gonna get all the power to the rear.
