what is done with the head is the base of the head is milled to create more compression. the advantage = more compression thus giving more low end grunt and yes it can be done without a port job

It makes your combustion chamber smaller. Think of a race engine. They are always talking about compression. I know a guy that races a Big wheel that cant pull start his engine, Even catching it in gear wont work because his back tire will just slide. They actually have to use a Roller starter. Its basically an impact wrench and even then sometime they have a hard time starting it. But more compression equals more power just like benny said.

there is a limit to it though obviously ...your squish clearance has to be right and the
static compression wil l actually fight" (for lack of a better word) the piston and create less rpm and harder on your crank bearing and rings.

how much material can be milled off of a banshee head with out having the squish clearance get too tight? a better method for head mods is turning them in a lathe but thats a problem with mono heads like the banshee. you need a lathe with enough bed clearance so the head doesnt hit the ways either that or use a lathe with a removeable sectioned bed. lathe turning lets you cut the squish band and combustion chamber as well as the head deck/ seal surface.
