Default Drag Racing

alright, so i got a '96 CR250 for this last x-mas. pretty tight, first time i've been on a bike. all i've heard so far is stupid ass people like my friends saying "too much bike for ur starter." but every day im proving them wrong already jumping with it in 2nd gear . but ya, im starting to drag race my friends on their quads. i can hardly beat my friend on his '04 z400. ok now my other friend has the '03 660 raptor. im pretty sure i can take him, atleast my bike should be able to. but i couldnt do it. my start blows ass. im on a semi-hard packed dirt road. we race 2 telephone poles, roughly 500 ft? but ya, any ideas how to start better. i've always started in 1st. i lean forward big time but yet my front end launches into the air even when i shift into 2nd and 3rd. some advice would be great, thanks.

I'm not a dirtbike guy, but you've definitely got some kind of issue...a CR 250 should complteley obliterate a z400 ( i used to have one) and should do the same to a craptor. I'd try starting in 2nd and playing with the clutch a little to start as hard as you possibly can without spinning or wheelying. When your waiting for the start...don't hold the clutch all the way in, just pull it in enough to keep from rolling, and when you get the go, don't just let go of the clutch lever, easily, but quickly let it out, thats kinda tough to explain, but play around with it when your just out cruising around and no one cares. you'll get it. hack, maybe even try that method starting in first. And than agin, I ride quads a lot more than bikes, so I may be telling you totaly the wrong thing. Just get out and play with it. Your not gonna burn the clutch up unless you go completely stupid wth it.

If your racing crap like that on a cr250 just do what dt250 said hold the clutch in enough to keep it from rolling then when you go let it out slow and let the bike start rolling in first then just open it up and shift thru the gears. If you wheelie alot tap your back brakes (this is what ive heard i dont drag race so i dont know if it works) and your front end will go down.

HAHA 370 i agree, if it was a yz then it might be too much bike. I would say get used to the bike first. get to the point that when the front wheel comes up, you don't actually back out of the gas, you clutch instead. I wouldn't tap the brakes at all, that's going to slow you down. Get yourself set and lean forward some. If the front is continually coming up then you might be too far back. I like to actually throw myself forward a little bit when i dump the clutch and get a slight bit of wheel spin. Also start in 2nd, 1st gear on bikes is about worthless unless you are trailing through some tight ass stuff. Hell you can still practice in the snow. HEHE

you know how you said thats not too much bike. My friend got a kx250 in august (his first bike), and i told him he was in over his head....and he shrugged it off. To make a long story short, he got into an accident with another bike and broke his arm and had two plates and 12 screws, and can never ride again...be a carfull and defensive driver, but still have fun.
