Need help determining year of motor?

Hey guys im getting ready to tear a 250 motor apart and i need to know what year im working with for ordering parts. Can someone offer me some help on this like how to read the vin on the cases and so forth?

is there a VIN on the motor? there is on the frame but thats not always what motor is in it. if there is the 10th digit will be F for 85, G for 86, H for 87, J for 88, K for 89, L for 90, M for 91, N for 92. 85-86 is the same, 87 is different, 88-92 are the same as far as top end parts. I THINK

check ur rod the #on it then call a local parts delear and give them the #then he could tell u the year

and top of the piston should have whatever brand's model number if you can read it and figure out whose it is, right? i didn't think about the rod i didn't know that number was year specific, i learned something today, momma would be proud

yeah see thats the problem guys, this motor is very very rigged. I havent tore the top end off it, but im willing to bet it has an aftermarket piston that the guy installed with the sleeve (coated cylinder he tried boring it). ill check it on lunch and let you all know

The motor is off a LT250r but the guy im working on it for rigged it all to hell he doesnt know what year it is. Here is the # off the cases can someone help on the year with this number ? J109-112091

thats not a vin but maybe its an 88 since it says J. just speculation. does the model number on the frame say LT250RJ?

Dont know i just have the motor nothing else.
