clutch problems

im new to the site and was hoping someone could help . i recently broke my chain and knocked a whole in the bottom end to repair it i pulled my motor off my quad in the process of removing the clutch cable I pulled what I believe is called the pinion bolt right out of the motor I took of the clutch cover plate and put it back together the way I think it goes but the clutch has no spring to it like it will not engage or disengage does the block need oil in it before it will work . Im know mechanic any advice would very appreciated thanks

It should work without oil. Get a service manual and start fresh. Make sure the pinion is properly installed back in the clutch cover and the the "rack" is facing the right direction when you put the clutch cover back on.
