Default reeds bad?

could i have bad reeds in my 86 lt250r? would that explain why it runs awesome and then sometimes its just flat? my boss rode it and he thinks that is the prob. what would i be looking for when i tear it down? would bad reeds make it foul your plug? fixing to tear it down

I was fouling plugs when I had broken a piece of the reed off on my 250r...also check that they aren't warped.

I agree that is a carb problem.. If it were the reeds it would always run the same... time to study up on jetting procedures.. changes in weather and the condition of the spark plug can have a tremendous effect on how well a poorly jetted bike runs... as for the reeds the cylinder must be pulled off to get at them on the early LT's... I wouldnt worry about them yet until you have the cash for a top-end job since its nearly the same amount of work

Ok I yanked it down after I posted. The history is the 86 engine has always fouled plugs to the point the plug is WET! It smokes like a freight train. I havent gone through the carb yet either. I went ahead and pulled it down. And tomrow I am tossing my 85 motor back on and the original mikuni carb so i can ride friday after work. Here are some pics maybe someone can tell what is going on.

I hope someone that knows more about 2 strokes can point me in where to go next. Maybe its a bad port job and the flow is jacked. Maybe its a carb problem. Ready to here and try the options. But I am puttin my 85 motor back on tomrow.

Got rough spots like something went through it at 1 time or another. But the rings appeared ok didnt look broke. Compression was 200-205psi. The problem is this thing will smoke bad foul plugs sometimes it pulls awesome sometimes it seems like its out of gas.I havnet measured ring gap yet. I am on the fence. Im thinking of buying a carb really soon and some jets to play with been in touch with quadzilla87 about getting a 39mm pwk but Im needing to measure the other pwk thats on it first.
