Default lt250 performance Q's

I found a 1985 lt250r thats been garaged for like 15 years, really nice shape all perfect and 100% stock. I just threw on an fmf fatty pipe and powercore silencer, well I didnt know about the engine differences between 85/86 and 87's and up having power valves. my question is, how big of a difference is 87 and up vs the 85/86. is it dramatic? should i not put any more money into this bike? Cus I had planned on taking this engine down to trinity racing for a stage 3 port job, and get the head milled. I want this bike to be a monster , but I dont want to dump money into an engine that wont perform. what do you guys think?

the non powevalve lt 250 is just as powerful as the pv one. the pv one might be a tad quicker. either way if your getting it ported either of the engines are going to perform good. but there might be a bit more aftermarket parts for the later year lt250's (88-92)

Depends on what kinda performance you are looking for and what you mean by "monster". How many races have you ever seen an 85/86 Suzuki win?

the 85-86 lt's and the 87-92 lt's are a night and day difference.. they didnt; just add a PV to the 85-86 style engine in fact it's an entirely different design... the newer ones destroy the old ones... and the PV in the new ones are useless.... so it has nothing to do with the useless rolign barrel power (restrictor) valve.... oh and trinity hahahahaha

whats so differnt about it? if the powervalve is useless, wheres the night and day difference about? besides suspension? which is no big deal, since ima get new a-arms and shocks.

it's a completely different engine... different cases, jug, trans, crank, piston, hell i think the only common thing is the connecting rod.... it's a totally different port layout, differnet head design.. how much more do you want.... not to mention that the 87-92 frame setup is alot nicer... the 85-86 style engine, chassis, and front suspension are all sub par to the sub par 87-92 engine, chassis and suspension.... so the 85-86 lt's suck major fucking balls.....

i'm not as vulgar but eric gorr of forward motion ports and does the head mod for under $200 if i can remember when he did mine. the porting was first class. i got compliments from my local shop on the work he did. plus it rips. with the major builders, u are paying for the name, the advertising they do, and for their race teams.
