| I can remember doing my first case like it was yesterday and it was actually over 20yrs ago. I was loaded with trepidation, actually shaking at the knees since the engine meant a hell of a lot to me and I couldnt afford to pay to have it done. I honestly believe that that fear helped me do it right. It made me pay strict attention to everything I did. But it was a whole lot easier than I had made it out to be. Read through the manual a couple of times making sure you understand whats being done. It won't help a whole lot but you'll get a basic idea. The manual either makes it look easier or harder than it actually is. Take your time, set things aside in the order you took them off, especially small washers that go on gearshafts and such. When you get the cases about to seperate, do so leaving all the gears on one side of the case and look it over. See how things go and work together. It'll help you figure out whats up if you do something wrong putting it back together. If you have a complete seperate set of tranny gears make sure they're assembled the same as whats in the cases. Match it all up with whats in the manual. Most of all, just take your time. If you get irritaded at it just walk off for a smoke or something. If you get stumped, stop. Ask here or sit down with the manual and try to figure it out. |

| atc, Like Kane said, it's sounds scarier than it really is, once you get in there you will surprised how simple it is. If you have a digital camera, take lots of pics, that will help, and while you have it apart, I would go ahead a change the bearings and seals.

| If its an 85, and has never had the bearings and seals replaced. Its best to do it while you have it all open, so that way you won't have to tear it down again so soon.

| when kane said keep all your trans shafts and misc parts together and in order or disassembly or assembly, however you look at it. . . plastic baggies and a sharpie markers work awesome too if you want to try that. . . . i'm assuming you got a whole new set of trans shafts with gears already correctly installed. . . . pair and label what you have and what you bought next or near to each other. . . . old shoe boxes help too for storage and dividing and seperating bagged parts. . . . |
