Question LT500 Q's. FEEDBACK PLEASE!!

Wondering if there is any difference between the 86's and the 87-?? when it comes to the wiring diagram.
Have been having problems with my CDI unit. This is the 2nd one I have tried. I am not doing something right,
The VIN on the thing starts with a H. SO I think that means it is a 86. ALso....IS there any diff between the resistence levels when it comes to the year models and do the levels change any?

SG,
An H model is a 87, it will have 6 head studs, 88-90's have 7 head studs (They didn't make them in 86) And they all use the same CDI unit. What kind of problems are you having, no spark, erractic running, we need more info?

Jim

its the 10th digit of the VIN that you want to look at for the year

It definitely sounds like a loose wire or a bare wire grounding on the chassis. I'd check them first.

AND.........Welcome to the site.

P.S. The most common problem is the pick-up coil, not the CDI. Have it checked with an Ohm-meter.

I never got the thing to start. When I first got it, there was no CDI unit at all on it. I have gotten 2 since then. The resistence readings do not match up tp the readings as stated in the owners book. I got spark once...But honestly I dpo not remember how I had them wired. I have wired in as the diagram says...But that is just not working for me. I am so frusterated at this thing... If I need another Pick up coil? Is there anyone who knows where I can get that? ALso....About the wiring; Is there any difference between the year models...And is there any difference between the CDI units...I ask that because I am not sure the year model that of the Quad that the the CDI unit I now have came off of. If it is a different year model would it make that much of a difference?

While the advance curve is a bit different for different years the CDI will swap out on ALL years of the LT500 as well as the LT250.

Connect the black with a white line wire, the blue wire, and the black with a red line wire (all from the stator) to the CDI. Make sure a black with a white line wire is grounded (connected) to the frame. From the CDI connect the black wire to the coil, leave the black with a yellow line wire disconnected. Leave ALL other wires disconnected. That is the complete circuit for the ignition with NO kill or stop switch connected. In other words, if it don't spark at that point you have a problem either on the stator (primary coil or pick-up coil) or with the secondary coil (spark plug coil). Also, make sure the sparkplug coil is mounted to a clean bare metal connection.
