i would put a pipe and jet kit on it with a uni filter and maybe change the gearing a bit and a good set of reeds like the g3's. That should do it. If you need any parts let me know I have several.

I have a fmf pipe for mine, not sure what kind?..i'm not sure if they make more than one kind for it do they?...wel anyway i have that, boysen reeds, it's bored .030, and stock gearing...and it goe's like hell, but to keep the 400 on top end i think i would change the gearing to about 14, 40 maybe and try the g3 reeds so you can tell me how they are.

WIth regard to the jetting part, thats not really something we can give you a concrete answer for. I'm sure somebody around here could get you a ballpark figure, but ultimately your gonna have to dial it in yourself by checking your spark plug. There are so many things that affect jetting such as temperature, altitude, mods you've done, etc. Its almost a trial and error deal to a certain point, in which case experience will help a lot. Which is why we're here. BUt anyways, it shouldn't take a whole lot to be running circles around that 400EXtraslow again. =)

how are you not keeping up right now?? you should be roosting that 400ex. well i guess you did say he's got some mods. i'd say LRD pipe, mild porting, G3 reeds. keep almost stock gearing. with the pipe, porting, and reeds i'd say bump the main jet up about 5 sizes and see what the plug looks like. 5 might sound like alot but it better to be rich and lean it to be right then starting lean and fattening it up. a ported LT with a pipe and good reeds and he should be eating your roosters!!!!

I can kill the 400ex on my 86 with the mods in my sig. As for why i like the uni filter. It keeps out alot more dirt than the k&n. If you ride in any dusty conditions I would recomend going with a uni or other good foam filter. The uni filters allow alot more flow than stock but blolck more dirt.
