Default more water pump questions!

When I rebuilt my motor I also rebuilt the water pump. After a hard day of riding there is a bit of a drip out of the impeller shaft relief hole (on the botom of the case), but when its driping its also steaming. Ive noticed that the hoses do the same steamy thing with no apparent leak. So is my radaitor not doing its job or is it simple bleading off the over fill. I run "Liquid Ice" coolant. The manual also calls for stop leak tobe added but I been told by many that its not needed. So what do you think???

Trouble shoting is great

Aaron

Did you replace everything on the water pump including the shaft, bearing, impeller and all seals? What do you mean by "steaming"? You may want to get a coolant temp. gauge because if the motor runs hot youll lose power.

Are you sure its not just moisture that is steaming. Does the weep hole drip when you start up the bike. My thought is you might just have small amount of water that is getting into the hole and dripping out when you stop and check it. My banshee will steam when I am riding in wet terrain.

Just a thought, I'm just not sure where the steam is coming from

All seals yes. shaft and impeller looked good. Is it a common thing for the shaft to be bent? And Ive also thought about getting a temp gauge but I wouldnt know where to look for one. And how much stock do you put in those in line coolers, the little billit ones?

"Steaming" happens around the water pump on the motor itself. Its almost like the liquid colant is getting to hot and getting vaporized within the closed coolant system then the pressure bleads out of that reliefe hole. And after this last session of hard riding I needed to add about 12oz (?) of coolant to the radaitor!

Thanks for your guys help!
Aaron

It is very common to have a bend in the impeller.

THose inline coolers I would not put to much stock in them. Well they help I think it would not hurt.

Are you riding through puddles and water? My motor if it gets wet will steam for awhile and i will look like there is not water on it.

Now the fact that you lost coolant is not a good thing. I would start it up and run it around the yard and see if you can find a leak

Ya Ive tried to find the source of the leak. Its out of that relief hole so I guess it would have to be a bent shaft which in turn is begining to warp the seals. It didnt leak at first but with more and more time on the new motor it seems to be getting worse.

well back to the parts store.

Thanks again

I had nothing but problems on my 86 LT..1st it was coolant and then it was gear oil.Go Figure..Just turn the impellers shaft by hand when you take off the clutch cover and see if it seems bent. Also make sure there isnt too much play in it.I had to reassemble mine a couple of times. Are you taking the clutch cover completely off because i bought one of those gimmick water pump repair kits and it didnt come with a clutch cover gasket so i thought i could get to it through the water pump side and had nothing but trouble...The way i assebled mine last and it seems to be working was as follows.I tapped in the mechanical seal into the crankcase first.I then slid the oil seal onto the impeller shaft with a little grease on the outside rim that will fit into the crankcase side and evenly tapped the bearing assembly in with the oil seal in where it would..It worked for me ...If this didnt work my next step was trying a clutch cover i bought on ebay because there is a little lip the oil seal sits in and my was damaged from my 1st attempt.Any questions let me know... !!!P.S.make sure you changed the little rubber washer where the impeller bolt is also!!!
