Default timing issues

hey guys, I am new to riding and purchased an 87 lt-230e. My question is if the balancer goes on only one way or could it be 180 out. the reason for the question is because at top dead center the piston is in the down position. I would really appreciate the input.

Welcome to E2S, I HOPE WE CAN ANSWER ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS....
I do believe that the lt230 is a four stroke, & I do not know that engine well. However, I think that the counterbalancer should only go on one way.
I do not understand your question that well, but at Top Dead Center...the piston should be at the very top of the stroke.

not being a gear head I was wondering how the piston could be at the bottom of the cylinder if the balancer was set at top dead center via the timing marks

I hope someone else will chime in because I don't think I can answer this one...
I would think that when the counter balancer is at top dead center the piston would be at bottom dead center, this way the rod/piston inertia & counter balancer inertia would be most likely to cancel each other.
