| Hey guys...awesome post!!! My bro and I have 4 LTs between us and cant afford the few options us LT riders have for front shocks. We may try some of these swap ideas however. During our first rebuild we were faced with the problem of the rubber bushing being shot, to the point where it was waering on the actual housing of the eye of the shock. The bushing Im speaking of is the one that surrounds the metal collar that rides on the mounting bolts, both upper and lower. We thought we had to throw them out, but we figured out with the right whole saw, a vise and a chunk of polyurethane, you can press in some home made jobs and keep those shocks alive until you figure out how to swap them out. I dont have the actual measurements of the hole saw, collar, etc but let me know if you would like it and I'll get them. 1. burn out the old bushing if a few minutes w/ a flat head screw driver doesnt work. 2. If the collar is in decent shape, keep it to reuse. If not, go to a decent hardware shop and get a new steel collar. It will most likely be too large, cut it down to within 1/8" and then gride down the rest to the width (~3/4") 3. Find a polyurethane manufacturer in your area. The one in the Portland area was a large company (Griffith Polymers) and when I told them what I was after, they let me into the shop floor and let me pick through a bin of excess poly! Do know that poly comes in different hardness, you dont want to use anything you can sink your fingernail into. Also, get circular ones that are about 2" in diameter, it makes them easier to cut after you drill the hole. I got a 12" long peice that has worked for 5 shock rebuilds. 4. Measure the outside diameter of the hole (like I said above, I can get this exact measurement of what we used if needed) and buy a hole saw for your drill. This needs to the large enough that the outside diameter of the "poly circle" left by the saw is greater then the OD of the shock eye. This needs to be pressed into the shock eye w/ a vise to ensure its not going to go anywhere. This process creates friction and in turn heat. Clamp the poly in a vise vertically. Use a good drill and stop every so often and let it cool. You only need to sink it in about an inch. Now put the poly in the vise horizontally and put it w/ a hack saw to 3/4". Now press the bushing into the eye. 5. Once the new bushing is pressed in, drill out the rest of the center (it will have a pilot hole in it from the hole saw) with a bit that is slighting smaller than the steel collar. 6. Now press the collar into the bushing. I hope you guys find this useful!! |

| I bolted a set of stock 03 kfx400 (same as z400) a arms on my 92 lt250r. They bolted up fine but since the frame mounting points are different on the frames, they caused the wheels to lean in. Adjustable a arms might work. The upper a arm is just a little to short. I would think the same should apply with 400ex a arms. In stock form, the would cause the wheels to lean bad unless you have adjustable a arms and can adjust the camber... |
