First gear feels like the trans is not completely engaged.I am leaning towards a warped clutch plate but I am not sure. The best way to describe the probelm is it feels and sounds like the chain is slipping on the drive sprocket. The chain is adjusted and the sprockets are in good shape. The quad will move in first gear but the nasty noise it makes has made me not use first gear at all due the the fear of damage.

Sounds to me like you might have some worn/missing teeth on your first gear, if thats the case you can easily find them and replace it, cause if every other gear is holding then most likely it's not your clutch. This happen to me a few years ago with 2nd gear, only way to find out is to pull it apart and split the cases, i would almost bet that this is your problem. You will have to replace 2 gears most likely, not the worst job in the world, just a little time consuming.

Yes If it makes a very bad noise it is not good, certanly a loud grinding noise. It sounds to me that your first gear is chipped. Drain the gear oil to see if you see any small pieces of metal. I would also take the clutch cover off to inspect the gears in that side case & clutch plates yourself.
If you had someone rebuild you engine, What are all the seals he put it? Also did he split the case?
I am not entirly certain that it is your transmission, Check the clutch assembly completely.
However, if it only does it in 1st.....it sound like a gear, but its not that common.

I had someone replace the crank seals because I was afraid to split the cases. The crank bearings were replaced as well. This quad has been a pain in the ass since I bought it a month ago,and a money pit!!! I am going to pull it apart in the morning,is it possible to replace first gear without spiltting the case???
Thanks for the help guys!!!!

No you have to split the cases to get to the transmission. You also must have had the cases split to install the new crank berrings...
