Default Tranny question

Well I finally got my quad going. Only problem is I broke a shock and I also need a new coil. Well the question is my tranny doesnt feel right when the engine is off and I shift through the gears. Sometimes I can only get 1st and neutral. and other times I can only get 1st neutral and 2nd. and then other times I can find all 6. The shifter lever also doesnt spring back down once you shift into a gear very well.
When I was putting my clutch back together my shifter shaft slided out and the shifter fork became unmeshed. I got it meshed back together and then started noticing this problem.

Any ideas??

maybe the spring on the shifter shaft wasn't put on the pin in the case right.

I had one I put together for a guy have a similiar problem. Upon re tear down I found that the backside bearing on the shift drum had tipped slightly at a angle in the case. It wasnt flush all the way in and the tabs that hold it in didnt push it all in straight because they are both off towards one side of the bearing. It was binding the shift drum when the whole motor was assmebled. No damage and no grinding just a lil bound up hahahaha. Check for small things like that and next time make sure it shifts through all the gears before putting it back together.

What side of the case is the bearing on? Do u have to split the cases to get to it?

fiveonick has the wrong year. 85-86 don't have tabs holding the bearing in. there is only one needle bearing on those years and its pressed into the case. and you would have to tear the engine apart to get at it.

If it was fine before working on the clutch, I wouldnt worry too much about it being inside the cases just yet. Look at the end of the shiftshaft on the clutch side. Like as not it isnt engaging properly such as the spring sblt500r mentioned. Maybe one of the pawls got bent? Something of that nature.

I wasnt implying that your problem was exactly the same, but instead to check small things such as that which can cause a big problem.

Thanks for the advice guys I will take a look at it this weekend. It def. sounds like it could be the spring since the shifter doesnt spring back into place once you shift up into a gear
