Default Is the 86 Motor that Bad!!!

I hear all this bashing around here about the 86 motor being a waste of time compared to the 87 and up motor. Is it really that bad.I was told by Will over at 1DIRRACING that the 86 with the direct fitted reed design can really kick some ass if it is ported right.Any ideas or suggestion!!!

I don't think they're horrible, i own one myself. But I'd rather have an 87 and up motor.

They can be made to run just as nearly any motor can. I dont think you will get one to run with a older motor with compareable work. They do have reliability issues and all around the older motor is better. If you already have money in one might as well keep going but if your just getting started then I would dump it. The whole key is how much time and money are you willing to invest. You are never going to be the fastest and if you are content with what you have then dont worry about it.

I have never really had any serious problems with my 85 engine, plenty of power there.

Your basically not going to have the Powervalve and the Reed cage setup. I think with the motor worked over it is going to be a great motor. Not to metion probably more reliable since there is less involved with the 86 motor

Will everyone stop calling the 87- jugs powervalve please. Yes they have a valve that opens to give a more refined powerband, but it is not by any means a true powervalve jug. You want a real powervalve go look at a new dirt bike jug or a pro-x pv. Its a damn powerchamber at best that is getting plugged up and smoothed on my next motor. What good is something supposed to gain power below 5000rpm if you never below 5000rpm?

The whole 86 motor is different, short stroke big bore, the castings are restrictive for max power, I just dont see it producing as much MAX power as a later model, and have never seen one that I would call more reliable either.

But the motor is only as bad as the condition it is in and the how it is taken care of.

thats a good point even rz conversion banshees dont make any more horsepower than a stock banshee cylinder when ported for high rpm dune/drags . atleast the yamaha pvl works, the lt ones just get loaded up with carbon cause theyre just laying halfway down the exhaust tract and really dont perform at all like a variable exhaust does on any modern dirtbike or cheetah jug. atleast they(suzuki) gave it a shot lol .guys that are really serious about making power on zillas ,opt to weld up the whole powervale assembly when theyre building drag motors out of them

Well I use low end a lot, so power below 5000 helps me out...

By next spring there will be a 250 running with it welded up too. Hell might have to have some big wholes the size of counter balancer bearings welded up too.

If anything under 5000k was important I would have to buy a four stroke I think.

Low end power is important to many people, including me. It's what helps make LTs such good all around quads. Just because it's not important to you doesn't mean it's wrong. Suzuki engineers put it there for a reason.
