| You do need a voltage regulator. It does just that, it regulate's the voltage. It will go bright and dim without it and, you will blow bulb's alot quicker because you are putting too much voltage into it. It will go bright and dim reguardless but, not as bad. |

| Technically, the need for a regulator depends on the source coil. Many machines do not use them, the source coils windings are wrapped with a gauge and specific number of windings that is self regulating, such as the 81-84 ATC250R's. As the coil ages and begins to deteriorate the bulbs begin to burn out from the coil putting out more power than normal, just before the coil itself is going to burn out. On these machines, and others without a regulator, it's always a good idea to put one on anyway. It'll save on bulbs burned out from spikes and surges. While you may or may not need a regulator, if your bike didnt come with lights, it's likely that it didn't come with a source coil either. Unless it comes with the lights from the factory it's normal to not have a source coil. If you're talking about the LT250 in your signiture, it'll have the source coil and you'll need the regulator if one isnt there. |
