Default newbie question

ok so i just got an 86 lt250r and i love it granted it is a bit rough. my reason for joining is that it doesnt seem as fast as it should be, a warrior beat it! the guy i got it from says its on its last bore but its a fresh bore and its been ported and polished ,so he says. so i guess what im getting at is why is mine so slow? i have extra sprokets if i need to regear. it also has no air box just a clamp on. do i just really need to tune it hard? i reset the carb screw to 3/4 out it was well over 2 turns out. so what do i need to do to get it fast as it should be?

also how can i tell if it was really ported correctly? that may be what is killing me.

Describe the obvious hop-ups, such as pipe and silencer, reed cage stock or rad/V, reedspacer, those kinds of things. We gotta know as much about your machine before we can really help much. The only 2 ways to tell port work is either the machinist stamped the exterior of the cylinder or you'll have to open it up and actually inspect it.

all that i know of is it has a dirtbike pipe and an answer silencer. from what ive read there isnt a reed cage on the 86 motors so the reed is probaly stock or fmf. it has a foam clamp on filter and k&n outer wear. thats really all that i know has been done to it motor wise. it has some works shocks in the front and thats all. i wont have a chance to look for a stamp cuz im at school and go home on the weekend.

Ok have you checked your airfilter to make sure it is clean? A dirty filter will make it run like shit.

I am not sure why there is a dirtbike pipe on you quad but thats not the point. Check the packing in the silencer. If the packing is junk you won't get the backpressure that you need.

If you air/fuel screw was 2 turns out you should go up a jet size. I would be intrested to hear what jets you are using right now. The lack of power could be caused by mis jetting. Have you taken the plug out to see how it is running. If you haven't take the plug out and tell us what color the plug is. It could also be a almost fouled plug.

i cleaned the outer wear and foam filter. the packing was burnt when i got it so repacked it with some fmf packing. before i reajusted the carb screw i would foul out plugs after each ride in it which was 2hrs at the most but it doesnt do it really any more unless it floods out. the first plug was black carbon fouled and when it floods it oil fouls, i run stock ngks. i do plan on getting a new pipe after i get it running better. i really dont want to get into the carb without a manual so i'll have to invest in one i guess. but now that i have the screw in at stock it runs better before it wouldnt even idle and had a bad bog before u gave it gas.i run 91 octane with amsoil mixed 12 oz to 5 gallons if that make a differnce. sorry i got to rambling but that is all i can think of.

thank for all help

amsoil should be mixed at 50:1. thats 380ml of oil (or 12.8 ounces) in 5 gallons of gas, so your pretty close.

First of all, what do you mean by a "dirtbike" pipe? Not stock, aftermarket, guessing? If you have a pipe on it that was made for a different machine I'd say you're in for some fun getting the jetting correct. The Dail-a-jet is a $50 mod with a 50 cent return as oppossed to correct jetting.
