When you say your adjusting your axle do you mean carrier? Are you adjusting your chain? NOt really sure what part you are tightening to be able to help you out.

When you turn the carrier it will get tight. It sounds like you need to take a link out and when you do make sure the carrier is turned all the way loose. If you look the axle in the carrier isn't in the middle so make sure it is all the way to the front and it will give more room to tighten. Hope this help cause it is kinda hard to explain without just being able to talk to you and tell you.
