how do i replace the shift shaft seal?

So this sounds real dumb, but how do i replace the shift shaft seal on a banshee bottom end? there is a black metal peice infront of it that is preventing me from pulling it out. i tried prying it out with a screw driver, and ripping it out with a pair of needle dykes, what is the trick?

in the manual it says do it before assembly.. but it shoudl just pop out with a screw driver i think.

thats what everyone says, but there is this little black metal thing like a retainer or something it must be glued in there or something... the clymers doesn't mention it as far as i could tell.

A black metal retainer...Doesnt sound famalier at all....Should just pop right out...Got a pic by chance?

i will take one tomorrow, i ripped the old seal out with needle dykes, but that damn metal thing won't budge...
