Default Blaster carb problems... HELP

Hi,

I'm new to this site, thanks for dropping by to help.

I own an 88 Blaster, unmodified except for a new aftermarket Kehinin PWK 28mm slide carb. Installation went well, I started it up, it idles and begins to accelerate, but not really well past 1/2 throttle; it seems to bog... like the bike is limited somehow.

Finally... when changing the carb from stock to aftermarket (and getting rid of the TORS system), do I need to do some cross wiring or something of that nature to complete this carb conversion from strock to new, running/properly?

Please respond quickly... trying to get ready for a ride, leaving tonight for Pismo Dunes, Ca. Thanks so much, rob

ok...first off youll need to re-jet the 28mm carb to suit your bikes needs. i have a mikuni 28mm, so my jet #'s wont help you out too much. on your blaster, just remove the tors control unit and unplug the throttle sensor wires...no splicing required on the older blasters.
do the tors box removal stuff first, see how it runs, if its still bogging, check the plug..black&wet= too rich on the main, white/silver and running very hot=lean on the main

Holtzer... thanks for the advise. I had read that there was some splicing, but I'm relieved that I don't have to in this case. Sudco recommended I begin with a 160 main (I started at a 158, then a 165), but with the changes I'm getting the same results: good idle, acceleration through bottom 1/3rd and bogging begining at 1/2 to 3/4. Will try to rejet. Any other thougths? - thanks, rob

What postion do you have the clip in on the needle?Try moving the clip up 1 groove and then retest. You may also need to tweek the pilot air screw.

Rules of thumb are:
idle to 1/8 throttle is pilot controlled (there is a certain amount of bleeding between 1/8 to 1/4 which is shared between the needle and the screw.
1/4 throttle to 3/4 throttle is needle control
3/4 to wot is the main jet

Its your jetting. What does your plug look like? Put a new one in first then go for a WOT run and then check it. Get back to me on the color.

Guys, thanks a lot. I've decided to leave the Blaster @ home; there's way too little time to change the jetting about now. The needle was in the middle, I dropped the clip one (raised the needle) before I (main) jetted from 158 to 165; I'm noting a lot of smoke.

Cy... I'll pull the new plug when I get back. ProTTZilla... Judging from your ratios and how my bike is performing, it sounds like it could also be a needle ... I'm running one that came with the carb... I'm not sure which it is, but there isn't any pep after about a third... boging out... hitting a (fuel) wall. I'll pull the carb and check it out; I'm not even sure what Sudco is recommending for the needle type/and clip position.

Thanks again for the replies... it's good to know the knowledge is out there. I'll be finishing the trailer now... gotta leave soon and my personal gear isn't even packed! Have a great weekend... - rob
