| i had one come back stolen once. the guy behind the counter didnt say a word. i was like, i found this bike on craigslist, the guy emailed me the vin. i wana know if its stolen. gave the numbers, and he said, yes it is! he said he could give me the number to report it if i wanted to. and i said no thanks. and then i left. from what i have been told... there is no other way that i can think of to tell if a bike has been stolen. i have tried calling the chp, and sherrifs, but they direct me to the dmv... when you sign up for atv insurance, they as you for the vin number on the bike, and they pull up the history of the bike. i have wondeed before if this would be a good way to see if something was stolen? every year when i get ready to change truck insurance, i get my vin, and call around, getting quotes for the cheapist price. they all run my vehicly history report. try calling some insurance company for a free quote on atve insurance, they will ask you the vin number, you give it to them, then ask if its stolen! you colud even give bogus info and block your number if you wanted.... just a thought? they might not run it unless you sign up, but im not sure. i do know that i called gieckop 3 days ago, and they asked for the vin on both my atv's....

| From an insurance perspective, we run the VIN yes but the information provided does not tell whether or not it is stolen. It is not a vehicle history report like you would get from carfax, all it does it populates the exact year, make and model of the vehicle/quad, and sometimes will say if its a salvaged/reconstructed title....but nothing to help with it being stolen or not. Its just how they help determine the replacement cost of that specific vehicle. So for example, I put in the VIN from my suzuki title(there is no VIN on the frame) only to find out that the VIN on the title makes it an 86 LT230s(the Title just says 86 LT), so the title I have is in fact NOT for my bike..because its an 86 LT 250r.. I have done what is previously mentioned, but just called the DMV and said I was interested in a bike and told them the VIN. They told me they had no record of it being stolen and I said great, thanks and went on my merry way.
