Exclamation shifter replaced

I have a '96 yz250. The shifter was stripped where it got to the point where I couldnt shift anymore. I took off the shifter and notice on the shaft is smooth just a bit on the tip\end of the shaft. I order a new shifter and was wondering if this wear is normal or will that shaft have to be replaced? I would like to get another year out of it. And can I use Blue Loc tite on the shaft and shift lever when I replace it.

It really depends on how worn the splines on the shaft are. Put your new shifter on it and tighten it down (do not over tighten it or you WILL strip out the threads), if there is a lot of play in it I would suggest replacing it or you'll just be buying a new shift (again) AND a shaft.
There is really no way we can tell you 100% if it needs replacing without seeing it.
