Question Question about what parts fit a 97YZ250

Hey guys, I have a 97 YZ250 and I am in the process of rebuilding the entire bike, I bought it as a basket case and am fixing it up to ride and get practice fixing everything. The engine was fried and I am having to replace the cylinder head but a new one from Yamaha costs 180$ and I want to do this low budget. I have found a few heads for sale cheap but none for a 97. I was wondering if anyone knew what other year heads will fit this bike and even better if anyone knew of a listing of all parts that will fit from other years. Thanks in advance for any help out there, this site rocks and has allready helped me out a ton!

Hit the partsfish.com site and list various 90's models to compare part numbers. Ebay is the cheap way to go, though.

Thanks Kane, I have been using the OEM parts finder to compare part #'s. For anyone interested I have found so far that 93,94,95 use the same head and so do 99 and 2000's but the 97 has a part number all on its own. I just dont know if any other head will work on it. Many look the same but I am wondering if it would change the compression ratio.

Good question. That sounds like something you should search ebay for cheap heads to experiment with. Having used to work for Yamaha, I can say that the change in the part number can mean as little as a different color coating on the exterior surface. Most Yamaha dealers can list the part on their computer and it will generally tell them the models any given part will fit. Micro fiche don't give such details so you need to go to a dealer with online parts support. This interchange info is not available online to the general public.

I'll have to give my dealer a call, I found a head for a 95 that looks the same and its cheap so its almost worth it to just give it a try. Thanks for the help.
