Default 97 Blaster quit running and won't start

I have a 97 blaster which I bought a month or two ago. The guy I bought it from said they were riding one day and it started to smoke lost power and shut off. Would not crank up so they towed it home. It sat up 8 months and I bought it for $400. The blaster look awesome besides the motor.

I brought it home and took the carb off and cleaned it with a friend who knows something about these 2 strokes. It was totally clogged up inside. Put it back on and fired it up. Now gas would flow out the drain tube for the bowl drain where it did not before, The screw was tight but gas would still trickle out.

Ran pretty good for a couple of weeks and then it started smoking and fluttering like the choke was on until I could no longer keep it running and it shut off. Pull the plug and it is soaked with fuel. Pulled the carb off and everything seems ok but I am not a carb person.

Clean the plug put it in and it will fire up one time and run for about 5 seconds and then shut off and the plug is gas soaked again. I pre mixed the 93 octane fuel and used the oiler even though it has hardly gone down in a couple tanks of gas.

At a low idle when it was running you could hear a little piston slap according to my friend but none when you rev the motor some. He thought it lacked a little top end power but is used to ridding modified bikes.

Where should I start and what is going on. Thanks for any help

I'd check the float height, no idea what it should be for a blaster though.
There could also be some debris in the needle valve and seat for the float, or the floats aren't floating.

Today I got a new plug and put it in and it fired up on the first kick and kept running to my suprise. I turned the fuel/air out to 1 1/2 turns and then to 1 3/4 turns out. It is still missing in the high rpm's though, just kind of flutters.

I am going to ride it somewhat and then pull the carb back off and see if I can figure out why the fuel is flowing out.

Is it worth buying another stock carb off or should I look to upgrade to something else? Should I go ahead and pull the top end off and see what is going on with the piston slap at the idle or just not worry about it now.

I cant remember right now but in the directions for my exhaust (jetting instructions) it says the stock float height. I'll look it up

float height i believe is 12mm....not postive off hand. its in my clymers book down in the garage. and your obviously running way to rich. for a quick fix pull the lid off ur air cleaner ...clean and oil ur air filter keep the lid off put the filter back in and try her out. that will lean it out a lil bit. tell us how it runs then. also what kind of oil is in the injector? gettin rid of the injector and premixing helps some to. glad you got a good deal on a blaster that was just jetted wrong. if the air filter doesn't lean it enough you gotta do a plug chop and go down some jet sizes.

i say take the head off if your friend said it was slapping cuz its better to do it now that wait have it blow up then be out of ridin for a while so check the head and maby a new carb.

im sure you dont need a new carb. it sounds exactly like its jetted to rich. check what its at. if the intake/engine/pipe is stock it should be at 230 main.

Never could stop the fuel from flowing out of the carb. Reset the float to make sure it would completely close.
Gave up
I bought a 28MM "D" slide carb, and new cable with 2 extra jet sets new off of e-bay. The carb is a OKO.

I also picked up a DG performance pipe and silencer for it. The price was right..Free
Got the carb in but the cable was not in the box so they are shipping it out to me. Will let you know what happens when it is fired up again.

the DG pipe and silencer is basically a stock replacement, at least you didnt have to pay for it. be sure to get a toomey, LRD, or graydon pipe sometime in the future

Got the throttle cable in last night and installed the new carb today and the idle screw was bent down against the carb body. Didn't notice until I went to set the idle. Anyway, called the company due to metal shavings coming out when I unscrewed it. I never could get the bike to idle at all. We finally agreed that I could send it back and I purchased a 30mm replacement instead of the 28mm I had. They are covering my shipping. Told me they would refund my purchase if I prefered.
It does not have the oil feeder tube but I pre mix my fuel anyway. I could not get the carb to fit in my stock airbox tube but they told me it would fit even though it would be really tight. They told me to soak the boot in hot water to to make it more plyable. I did have a clamp on filter when I fired it up.

What do you have to do to remove the oil pump anyway?

The DG pipe and DG silencer sounded awesome and weighs about 2/3rds less than the stock. I did ride it a short bit and the throttle response was much more crisp but everything down low was unstable and I had to keep reving it up to keep it from stalling.
I will try again next week hopefully.
