Default boost bottle for big bore 2 strokes?

does anyone know much about the boost bottle thing thats on the big bore air cooled 2 stokes like the yz 490 and wr 500? are they needed on there to make the bike run correctly? I took mine off and just found this little rubber tittie piece thing to put in place of the hose and bottle. but I cant get the thing to run good. just wondering if its cause I removed the boost bottle that its not running right?

the bottle is designed to help the carb when you land off of a jump. Its suppose to keep the motor from bogging. I had one on an old '81 yz250, as long as you plug the hole, you can run without it.

maybe it doesnt run perfect because the hole has a bit of a leak still, start it up and spray some carb cleaner where the holes were and see if it runs any different.
