Talking My YZ 100 parts bike

When I bought my 79 YZ 125, the guy had a "parts bike" YZ 125 he was willing to throw in for another $100 bucks. I couldn't tell exactly, but it looked like a 1980. Rear suspension sat up in the sky, was seized, motor was locked up as well, fork seals gone, plastic missing. The only thing that caught my interest was the gold cyl head on it. So whatever after some haggling I ended up taking the parts bike and a bunch of 1981 YZ 1125 stuff I can't use [a motor, a monoshock, swingarm etc].

It looked like this when I got it home, minus the rear fender lol. It had some huge [incorrect] monoshock in it.

As weeks went by I couldn't help but start to get a soft spot, thinking it was still a 125, until I was looking at the head one day and saw 98 cc. I decided to slowly see if I could bring it back, and started with a rear shock I got off E bay for 20 bucks. After that was done, I decided one day to see if I could get the motor to turn over, it was stuck, even rolling it along in gear resulted in dragging the rear tire. I gave up an it sat for a few weeks. Then one day I was out in the garage talking to a buddy about the other bikes, and started looking at this one, and proceeded to show him how it was "seized" and grabbed the kick start, and doesn't the stupid thing roll over by hand, but you could hear compression leaking out from somewhere.

It was too cold to do anything about it that day, but we got a warm spell [like around freezing here lol - the heat will kinda work] and I was porting a head for a buddies Skyline GTR. I was finishing up for the day and my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to mess with the bike. I yanked the tank, exhaust and cyl head off and discovered whoever put the head gasket in didn't make sure it was seated in the groove, and then they tightened the head down and of course it leaked. Anyway long story short I reused the copper gasket, made sure it was seated and put it back together and compression was ok. Next I checked for spark, and it had spark, so I added some old 110 fuel I had, and used some ether and it wouldn't start. Pulled the plug, and the spark was now gone. I pulled the stator cover off and for some reason someone went and pulled all the wiring so that it ran forward out the front of the stator, literally running the wires in between the flywheel and the.... uhh.. whatever them things are surrounding the flywheel [brain fart]. I tore that all apart, had to resolder one of the wires back in place, and tape some up as they were rubbed bare and cracked.

Put it back together and had spark. Sprayed some ether in the carb and it fired first hit. It needs the carb cleaned out etc, because it does some goofy stuff if you let it idle too, it idles high then dies. But it's still missing a bolt that holds in the reeds lol.

So yesterday I filled the case with some oil, and decided to take it for a ride. All i can say is "wow". It's sluggish because it's not running 100% but once it comes on the pipe it was lifting me up in 3rd gear and i'm 230 lbs. I couldn't do much because I live in town, but I had a good 10 min ride on it. It's going to be a nice little bike when I am done I think.. here is where it's at now..

I am in the process of scraping the faded to orange tank with a razor blade to get the yellow back lol, then i'll find some way to sand it smooth.

Sitting on a pail of Citgo 110 haha..

I'm sorry about the length, but i'm just geeked because this was something that was going to be scrapped. I think that's why i got attached <shrug>

On the underside it says "DG Perf" stamped into it, and the combustion chamber is absolutely tiny. I'm guessing that was part of the reason the bike pulled so well. All I have been able to find online really is that they are very hard to find now, and to make sure i ain't running pump gas w/ it which I wasn't.. I had some 110 left from last season from the car.

I did get info from a guy using the exact same one on his 79 YZ 125 and when I had it off I compared it to the stock head from a 79 125 and it will go right on... the compression will jump a bunch fur sure, I should have snapped a pic of both heads, I never thought....

Nice find. I like the old yellow YZ's. A neighbor has a 1980 YZ250 for sale for $500. I might just go grab it. lol
